About Us

The birth of cinema is marked by one key development.

People had been enjoying watching moving images on Edison’s kinetoscope since its patent was granted in 1893 but the Lumiere Brothers are credited with the birth of cinema in 1895. Their machine was a Cinematographe and cinema is named after it as it provided the opportunity to do something special.

You could only watch the Kinetoscope on your own. Cinema was born when you could share the experience with a room full of people all watching a big screen together.

Suffolk Silents Society is creating a new Film Club based in Ipswich, Suffolk that will provide regular opportunities to watch silent movies of all kinds in their natural setting – a big screen, with a big audience.

Further details will be announced in due course. In the meantime you can follow us as @SuffolkSilents on Twitter and Facebook. You can also e-mail suffolksilents@btopenworld.com.

You can also support us on Kickstarter until 1st December 2014.
